These days there are many tools available to research outliers. One of my favorite tools to use is 1of10. This tool allows you to find outliers in any niche in only a couple of clicks.
Other great tools that you can use are VidIQ's free Chrome Extension, and MrBeast's ViewStats.

While planning the thumbnail, we noticed viral thumbnails in this niche have overlapping elements:
1) Multiple capsules are visible at once.
2) Viral thumbnails show people in the capsule to capture the scale.
3) Most thumbnails show the same 'sci-fi' looking capsule hotel.
Step 2: Outlier Research
We used these elements as the base for our thumbnail. However, some of the most popular thumbnails are 3+ years old, so there was room to optimize our thumbnail even more.

Some of the elements we changed up compared to the old viral thumbnails are:
1) Our thumbnail is more zoomed in
2) Use of leading lines to make the thumbnail easy to read
3) Use of complementary colors to make Andrew & the capsules stand out
4) A realistic neutral face expression.
